NEW DELHI: External affairs minister S Jaishankar on Sunday affirmed that Article 370 was a temporary provision and it was hindering the extension of progressive laws to Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Speaking to the Indian community in Singapore, he highlighted the visible benefits of the recent changes. Jaishankar noted that the existence of Article 370 had negative consequences, fostering separatism, violence, and terrorism, posing security challenges for the nation. He said that it prevented the implementation of forward-looking laws in the region.
“One, it created an ethos of separatism, violence and terrorism. And this became a problem for the security of the entire country. Second, it prevented very progressive laws from being extended to Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh at that point,” he added.
On August 5, 2019 the government revoked Article 370 of the Constitution, thereby abolishing the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and dividing the state into two Union Territories.
“Today, you can see the benefits of the change that has happened,” he said while responding to a question. Jaishankar is in Singapore on a three-day visit from Saturday.
Article 370 granted special autonomous status to the region of Jammu and Kashmir. Enacted in 1949, it provided Jammu and Kashmir with a separate set of laws, including those related to citizenship, property ownership, and fundamental rights, compared to other states in India.
