VIZIANAGARAM: At least three persons were killed, and several others were injured on Sunday when a passenger train (Visakhapatnam to Palasa) collided with another passenger train (Visakhapatnam to Rayagada) near Alamanda- Kankatapalli in Vizianagaram district.
The passenger train traveling from Vizag city to Rayagada derailed after the collisionbetween the two trains.According to preliminary information, the Visakhapatnam-Palasa train had come to a halt between Alamanda and Kankatapalli under Kothavalasa mandal in Vizianagaram district, waiting for a green signal. The Visakhapatnam-Rayagada train collided with the stationary train from behind, causing three coaches of the Rayagada train to derail
Officials from the Waltair Division of East Coast Railway arrived at the accident spot. A large-scale rescue operation was launched, involving NDRF, police, and various teams. Nearby residents rushed to the site, and some young individuals were seen assisting the victims trapped in the mangled coaches.
The authorities suspect that the death toll may increase as some of the people suffered major injuries in the incident.
The darkness at the accident spot has hit the rescue operations. Some of the injured persons were shifted to government hospital in Vizianagaram.
