After V-B eviction notice, Bengal registers plot in Amartya’s name | India News

SANTINIKETAN: The Bengal government updated its land records on Monday to name Nobel laureate Amartya Sen as the lessee of the entire 1.38-acre plot on which his Santiniketan home Pratichi stands.
The latest move in the battle of attrition between Visva-Bharati and Sen over a portion of his family estate came three days after the university issued an eviction notice to the Harvard economist, claiming he had been “illegally” occupying a 0.13-acre section of the plot.
“A will has been probated in the Calcutta high court in Amartya Sen’s name, which says he inherited the entire 1.38 acres from his parents. Sen’s name has been updated in the record of rights,” Birbhum district magistrate Bidhan Ray said.
The document uploaded on the state government’s website mentions Visva-Bharati’s registrar as the lessor. The “remarks” column shows Sen as the lessee.
Sen had approached the block land and land reforms officer of Bolpur, seeking to transfer the entire plot to his name by virtue of being the sole heir of his late parents. The central university opposed the move while the administration ruled in Sen’s favour.
Visva-Bharati’s officiating registrar and estate officer Asoke Mahato said the university was yet to receive any document from any state government department regarding the status of the land that Sen says he entirely inherited
