NEW DELHI: Protesting against the exclusion of leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge from the high-level committee on “one nation, one election“, Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury declined to join the panel after his name was included in the committee.
Chowdhury wrote to home minister Amit Shahthat he’s not willing to be part of a panel in which RS LoP and Congress president Kharge is not a member. He also said the committee has been formed after its conclusion has already been determined, as evidenced by its terms of reference.
While calling the high level committee on simultaneous elections a “systematic attempt to sabotage India’s parliamentary democracy”, Congress general secretary K C Venugopal also questioned exclusion of Kharge from the panel, triggering a chain reaction, culminating in Chowdhury’s letter withdrawing from the panel.Venugopal said, “In a shocking insult to Parliament, the BJP has appointed a former LOP to the committee (Ghulam Nabi Azad) instead of Rajya Sabha LoP Mallikarjun Kharge.” He asked if Kharge, a leader who has risen from a humble background to lead the oldest party of the country, is an inconvenience to the BJP.
He added, “First, they bring this gimmick to distract from the Adani mega scam, unemployment, price rise and other pressing issues of the people. Then, to make matters worse, they try to tilt this committee’s balance by excluding fierce opponents. What is the reason behind Kharge’s exclusion?”
