Aap: Punjab Congress slams AAP for supporting BJP on UCC | India News

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Congress on Thursday strongly criticised the AAP for its decision to extend support to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and aligning with the BJP-led Union government’s divisive tactics ahead of the 2024 general elections.
Senior Congress leaders Partap Singh Bajwa and Amrinder Singh Raja Warring voiced concerns that the implementation of the UCC could disproportionately affect minority communities, placing them in a vulnerable position. They contended that there was no need to call for the 22nd Law Commission when the 21st Law Commission had said that it is “neither necessary nor desirable at this stage” to have a UCC.
Bajwa alleged that the AAP took the stand on UCC after the Comptroller and Auditor General of India decided to conduct a special audit into the alleged “administrative and financial” irregularities in the renovation of Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s official residence. Besides this, a probe into the alleged liquor scam was also on. Bajwa claimed that the AAP supremo’s motive behind the move was apparently to save his own skin.
Taking potshots at BJP, Bajwa said: “With the preparation for the UCC, the BJP is attempting to divert the attention of the people from its failure to tackle the growing unemployment and inflation. The BJP has also failed to restore peace in violence-hit Manipur. Meanwhile, with the agenda to consolidate its vote bank ahead of the 2024 general election, the BJP has been infringing on the rights of minority communities. With this, some sections of the majority community will also get affected.”
Warring asked the AAP why it should not be termed as a ‘B Team’ of the BJP when the AAP has been toeing the line of its masters, the BJP. “In August 2019, the AAP extended its unconditional support to the Union government led by the BJP when Article 370 was revoked and the full state of Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated into two Union Territories. But now the ‘Broom Party’ (AAP) is crying foul on federalism,” he added.
Bajwa said that the AAP also extended its support to the BJP on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).
“The Sikh majority state, Punjab voted the AAP to power with such a massive mandate. Why didn’t the AAP feel the urge to take the Punjabis into confidence while taking a final decision on UCC? The manner in which the AAP takes such crucial decisions dictatorially demonstrates that the AAP doesn’t practice the principles of democracy within the party,” Bajwa added.
