RANCHI: An Enforcement Directorate (ED) team questioned Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren for about seven hours at his official residence here on Saturday in connection with the Ranchi land scam case amidst protests by hundreds of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha workers.
The ED has summoned the CM eight times. After skipping summonses for the seventh time, Soren agreed to record his statement.ED has initiated investigations of three land scam cases based on multiple FIRs registered by the Jharkhand and West Bengal police against land dealers.
An ED team comprising 10 officials arrived at Soren’s house at 1pm, escorted by central paramilitary forces and state police. The team left around 8.30pm.
ED sources said the team conducted a comprehensive but amicable interrogation of the CM, including questions about an allegedly “illegal transaction of a plot of land measuring 8.5 acres in Bariyatu area of the city”. Sources also said the agency is yet to decide on questioning Soren further.
“We formed the new state of Jharkhand after a long struggle. I will not allow it to fall into the hands of conspirators. I am highly gratified by the support shown by my supporters and will always be with you,” Soren told JMM supporters minutes after the ED team left.
He alleged that after being unable to compete politically, BJP was “conspiring behind the curtains to uproot his government”. He said a strong reply would be given to organisations with ill intentions towards the state.
Soren then asked JMM workers to go to the villages and inform people about how a conspiracy was on to allow corporate houses to loot the state’s rich resources. Several paramilitary personnel escorting the ED team were seen wearing body cameras.
