NEW DELHI: A bilateral agreement with Qatar for transfer of sentenced persons, which might have allowed the government to bring the eight imprisoned Indian Navy veterans back to India, is yet to be ratified by Doha. India has ratified the treaty that was signed during Qatar Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani’s visit to India in 2015.
Following commutation of the death sentence awarded to the Navy vets to imprisonment, the government reiterated on Friday that it’s discussing the next course of action with the legal team and family members. The government also continues to raise the issue diplomatically with Qatar.
Neither India nor Qatar has confirmed the specifics of the jail term but relatives, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said while one among them faced 25 years in jail, others had their death sentenced commuted to jail terms between 3 and 15 years.
