2023 Chhattisgarh assembly polls result: 5 biggest and 5 narrowest wins | India News

NEW DELHI: The BJP was able to carry out a major upset in Chhattisgarh on Sunday after easily snatching power in the state, which most exit polls had suggested would be a close call.

As per the latest data by the Election Commission, the BJP is projected to win 54 seats, well past the 46-seat majority mark, while the Congress is expected to win just 35 seats.
Expressing gratitude to the “janta janardhan” for choosing the BJP in Chhattisgarh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the results “indicate that the people of India are firmly with politics of good governance and development”.

Union minister Amit Shah said, “Tribal, poor, farmer sisters and brothers of Chhattisgarh have expressed faith in PM Modi and blessed BJP with a huge majority.”

Battle of guarantees
Ahead of the state assembly elections, held in two phases on November 7 and 17, both the Congress and BJP had tried hard to woo farmers, women and the poor with populist schemes.
It seems the promises made by the BJP, which it promoted as ‘Modi ki Guarantee 2023’, worked in its favour.

In the 2018 assembly polls, the Congress had registered a landslide victory largely because of a “strong” anti-incumbency against the then BJP dispensation and the grand old party’s promise of freebies and welfare measures.
As the BJP began its election campaign this time, it faced the herculean task of countering the Bhupesh Baghel government’s pro-farmers, pro-tribals and pro-poor schemes, which the Congress was banking on to retain the state.

Both the parties in their manifestos offered sops to various sections of society.
