RAJKOT: The happiness over winning the ‘best garba‘ prize turned into grief for an 11-year-old girl, whose father was bludgeoned to death by six people, including the Navratri organizers, in Porbandar town of Gujarat early on Tuesday.
The girl, Krupali Odedara, was chosen for prizes in two categories but when her mother Mali went to pick her up at the venue, the girl informed her that she had received only one prize.
Mali then went up to the garba organizer, Raju Keswala, and merely inquired about it. Keswala, however, rudely told her that nothing could be done as the event was over. This resulted in some arguments. Wives of Keswala & co-organizer Raja Kuchhadiya joined the fight and they allegedly threatened to kill her if she did not leave the venue immediately.
Mali returned home around 1am and was sitting outside her house with her husband Sarman. At around 2.30am, some people on four bikes came there and started thrashing Sarman with thick wooden sticks. They forced him onto a bike and took him to the garba venue where he was beaten again.
His distraught wife informed police and rushed to the venue. Sarman was taken to the civil hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Cops have booked Keswala, Kuchhadiya, their wives Pratik Boraniya and Ramde Bokhiriya, and some unidentified people for murder, kidnapping and rioting.
