Who knew an honest book review could disrupt a longstanding marriage? Julia Louis-Dreyfus puts this plot to the test in “You Hurt My Feelings,” an upcoming A24 movie from filmmaker Nicole Holofcener, when her lead character, a successful novelist named Beth, accidentally overhears her husband’s (Tobias Menzies) negative reaction to her latest work. The sharp dramedy finds the married couple at a crossroads when honesty and a little white lie send Louis-Dreyfus’s Beth into an existential crisis.

“You Hurt My Feelings,” written and directed by Holofcener, made its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival in January, which earned Louis-Dreyfus glowing reviews from critics. According to Holofcener, the film actually began as a question to herself when she asked, “What if someone likes me but doesn’t get my movies? . . . Is it OK for someone to love me but not love everything I do? Or is my ego so frail it can’t take that?”

“The script flowed from this concept, but as it did, it became equally about marriage, truth, loyalty, and parenting at this particular time in the world,” she added, per the film’s press notes. The filmmaker went on to add that Louis-Dreyfus, whom she refers to as “somewhat of a muse for me,” was cast in the forthcoming movie because “she could evoke all the subtlety of Beth’s self-searching as well as play the more comedic side the way only she can. In my writing, there’s never drama without some comedy, and vice versa, and that’s also true of Julia’s approach.”

Louis-Dreyfus’s latest movie role comes a few months after she starred in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and Netflix’s “You People” with Eddie Murphy, Nia Long, Lauren London, and Jonah Hill. The “Seinfeld” alum and mom of two is also set to reprise her Marvel role (Valentina Allegra de Fontaine) in the upcoming “Thunderbolts” movie in 2024.
