The first season of “The Idol” wraps this Sunday, but according to star Da’Vine Joy Randolph, there’s definitely more story left to tell. “I absolutely think there’s a season two. I’m not saying it’s official, but there’s definitely a whole vast world that could be developed,” Randolph told Deadline in an interview published on May 23. The outlet also reported that Randolph, who plays Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) manager, Destiny, received the loudest cheer of anyone at the show’s Cannes Film Festival premiere on May 22.
Speaking to News JoJo on May 24, Randolph expressed similar sentiments, saying, “No official talks, but everyone’s hopeful. We really love doing this project and would love to do it again.” Jane Adams, who plays record label executive Nikki who works with Jocelyn, also told us she’d return for a second season. “It’s really thrilling working with Sam [Levinson]. He’s wonderful to work with,” she said. “I have a lot of memories of good laughs.”
In an interview with Variety published June 29, Randolph once again noted “that everyone’s intention is to have a second season.” She added: “This was never intended to be a limited series. Nothing is official, but HBO is quite happy.”
Of what Randolph would like to see in the second season, she told News JoJo she’d love an exploration of “Jocelyn and Tedros’s [Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye] relationship now at this new form and what that’s like.” She explained, “I think you would see more and more of the fact that Tedros actually is quite talented. I could easily see him perhaps even joining the team in some way, shape, or form.”
“The Idol” was created by Tesfaye, Sam Levinson, and Reza Fahim. It tells the story of Jocelyn, a pop star dealing with mental health struggles while caught in the crosshairs of the predatory music industry. In addition to Depp, the star-studded cast includes Hari Nef, Troye Sivan, Jennie Kim, and Rachel Sennott. “Euphoria” star Alexa Demie also appears briefly in a club in one scene, indicating that “The Idol” and Levinson’s other major HBO project may take place in the same universe.
While discussing the possibility of a season two, Randolph said she’d love for Colman Domingo, who plays Ali on “Euphoria,” to join the cast. “I personally really love Colman Domingo as a human being and as an actor,” she told News JoJo. “There were talks of potential crossovers of characters from ‘Euphoria,’ those two completely different worlds. If there was a way in which Colman’s character could come over, I’m just thinking off the top of my head, how funny if we had an intervention and sat [Jocelyn] down and had a chat with her.”
“The Idol” experienced some creative turmoil; director Amy Seimetz exited the project and Levinson replaced her. A March Rolling Stone exposé alleged that the set was plagued by toxicity, particularly after Seimetz’s exit, though A24 and HBO denied those allegations. Early reviews coming out of Cannes have also expressed shock at the show’s explicit themes.
Randolph told Deadline that the Rolling Stone report’s allegations were exaggerated. “I wouldn’t even be a part of no mess like that,” she said. “So for me, I just let people think what they think. But I was excited. We’re not even out yet, and people are getting worked up.” Randolph also noted that the attention is just feeding into the show’s influence. “The way the world is now if you’re getting that much buzz and it’s not even out yet — that is the best press you can get,” she said. “If nothing else, people are going to watch it.”
