NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee reiterated her opposition to the CAA, NRC, and the Uniform Civil Code during Eid prayers in Kolkata on Thursday.
“We are ready to shed blood for the country but will not tolerate torture for the country. A uniform civil code is not acceptable. I want harmony among all religions. Your safety. Your life.No NRC, no CAA,” said the West Bengal CM.
Earlier last month, Mamata had expressed her opposition to the CAA, calling it a ‘political gimmick’ ahead of the Lok Sabha polls and stating that she doesn’t want ‘detention camps’ in West Bengal.
“CAA is related to NRC, that is why we are opposing it. We don’t want detention camps like those in Assam,” she had said.
The Centre announced the notification of the rules to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act on March 12.
The CAA was passed in December 2019 and subsequently received the president’s assent, but protests erupted in several parts of the country against it. The law could not come into effect as rules had not been notified until now.
The TMC supremo also attacked the BJP government, alleging misuse of central agencies, “If there is a blast, they (BJP) send NIA to arrest everyone. By arresting everyone, your country will become desolate.”
A team of National Investigation Agency (NIA) officials was allegedly attacked by villagers in the Bhupatinagar area of West Bengal’s Purba Medinipur district on Saturday. The officials went there to investigate a 2022 bomb blast case, according to police reports.
The West Bengal CM also extended her greetings for Eid during her address at Red Road in Kolkata.
“Eid Mubarak. It is the Eid of happiness. It is the Eid of giving strength. It is a big thing to observe this Eid by fasting for a month,” she said.
