BURDWAN: A 133-year-old overhead water tank at Burdwan railway station came crashing down on the shade between platforms 2 and 3 on Wednesday, which collapsed under the impact, killing three persons and injuring 27 others.
The incident disrupted train movement between platforms 1 and 4 for an hour. Railway authorities have set up a three-member inquiry team to probe the collapse.
With a Howrah-bound local train scheduled to pull in at 12.25pm, scores of passengers were waiting under the shade when the water tank, with a capacity of 53,800 gallons, crashed onto at 12.08pm.The shade, in turn, collapsed on the passengers below, trapping them under a tangle of iron, steel and cement, with water gushing out at great force. Stone chips from the tracks of platform 2 flew around 25 metres under the impact and landed on platform 1. A few passengers landed on the tracks and were critically injured.Eastern Railway CPRO Kausik Mitra said the water tank was maintained regularly.
