DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand government has launched an anti-encroachment drive on its land, even enlisting the help of the state intelligence unit, to “identify areas where encroachment has been done with the intention of changing the demography.” The government has asked for daily reports from the task forces, consisting of DMs and SSPs/SPs.
The development follows a high-level meeting on Friday evening between chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and officials of the home department and state police, who were asked to accelerate the anti-encroachment drive on government land.
The move comes a few weeks after Dhami had said at a public meeting that “Uttarakhand will not allow land jihad,” indicating that the government will act tough on people from outside the state, especially those belonging to the minority community, who had been settling in areas in the state ‘with the intention of changing the demographic pattern of the area.’
V Murugesan, ADG (law & order) appointed as the state nodal officer of the drive, confirmed that “data of action taken by district task forces would soon be compiled and forwarded to the government on a daily basis.” The ADG added: “Focus of the drive is to ensure appropriate action against encroachments.”
An official of the state home department, privy to the details, meanwhile told TOI: “As per the direc-tions given in the meeting, task forces have been created in each of the 13 districts. They will also include officials from other departments such as forest, revenue and irrigation.”
He added: “Officials will work in tandem by sharing information about encroachments on lands of their respective departments. State intelligence unit will be gathering information, especially in Haridwar and US Nagar districts along with areas on the outskirts of Dehradun.”
