NEW DELHI: Prime minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Urja Ganga’ pipeline has taken the benefit of reduced natural gas prices to the hinterland, a move that will help expand adoption of the cleaner fuel and help upcountry small towns and cities breathe easy.
The reduction in CNG (compressed natural gas) and PNG (piped natural gas) prices by state-run GAIL has brought benefit of Rs 5-7 to consumers in 20 towns and cities in the hinterland that now have access to the cleaner fuel because of the flagship project.
Cheaper CNG and PNG as a result of the new domestic gas pricing regime announced on Friday is expected to speed up adoption of the cleaner fuel, leading to reduced vehicular and industrial pollution is cities.
Urja Ganga will also carry the benefit of cheaper gas to fertiliser plants at Gorakhpur, Sundari and Barauni. One of the key objectives of the project is to fuel industrialisation in the eastern region by reviving these plants. The uniform tariff policy envisaging equitable gas transportation announced recently adds to Urja Ganga’s viability in expanding access to natural gas.
Urja Ganga envisages laying 3,384 km of pipeline to connect UP, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Assam to the national gas grid. The project’s first component is la 2,655 km pipeline connecting Jagdishpur in UP, Haldia in West Bengal, Bokaro in Jharkhand and Dhamra in Odisha. The second is a 729 km pipeline linking Bihar’s Barauni and Guwahati. The project has been commissioned till Barauni.
