NEW DELHI: In a recent address at the 3rd Strategic and Security Dialogue on the Rise of China and its implications for the world, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan highlighted the ongoing challenge posed by the unsettled borders with China and the country’s growing influence. General Chauhan emphasized the importance of handling the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) with tact at all points of contention along the disputed borders.
India has long grappled with unresolved borders with its neighbors, leading to the establishment of terms like the Line of Actual Control, Line of Control, and Actual Ground Position Line. General Chauhan underscored that these unresolved borders with China and the country’s ascent will continue to be the most significant challenges faced by India and its armed forces in the foreseeable future.
Maintaining the legitimacy of India’s claims on these disputed borders during peacetime is crucial, requiring a delicate approach towards the PLA, firmness, and adherence to agreed rules of engagement by both sides. The top military commander cautioned about potential actions by adversaries to alter facts, engage in cartographic aggression, or create new narratives, underscoring the collective effort needed to counter such moves.
Referring to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s remarks on the complexity of Sino-India relations beyond border disputes, General Chauhan stressed the need for a nuanced perspective in an interconnected world. Acknowledging the global impact of China’s rise, he emphasized the importance of seeking alliances with like-minded nations while being prepared to defend national interests.

Addressing the technological challenges, General Chauhan highlighted the significance of technology as a new form of power currency. He expressed concerns about the risk of a technological gap between India and its adversaries, emphasizing the need to retain a competitive edge through collaborative efforts across sectors.
The Chief of Defence Staff also discussed the vulnerabilities arising from political, social, and economic fragility in India’s immediate neighborhood. He noted that amidst regional turbulence, India stands as a beacon of stability, underscoring the need to address security challenges stemming from neighboring instabilities.
