UK envoy: Attack on India’s London mission symptom of extremism | India News

NEW DELHI: UK high commissioner Alex Ellis on Wednesday described the recent vandalisation of the Indian high commission in London as “totally not okay”, saying it’s a symptom of extremism. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak too had condemned the violence recently.
At an event held at the Ananta Centre here, Ellis said, “There is no disagreement. What happened at the Indian high commission is not okay. Overall extremism is a risk in any country.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also raised the issue in a phone conversation with Sunak and sought action against the perpetrators.
Ellis further said he completely understood the anger in India over the vandalism at the high commission and he would be equally agitated if it happened to the British high commission.
Asked about the action by Indian agencies against BBC, Ellis said all organisations have to follow the law in India.
“The British Broadcasting Corporation is a globally respected institution and broadcaster whose news material I consume everyday. Second, all organisations have to obey the law of India. BBC is talking to Indian authorities about that,” Ellis said.
“Certainly, I would never share all the things that I discussed with the Indian authorities. But good friends can also disagree. I think that it is okay to disagree sometimes,” the British high commissioner said, making it clear that he was making a general point.
