Uddhav Thackeray lacked political acumen, failed to quell revolt: Sharad Pawar | India News

MUMBAI: For the first time since the formation of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in 2019, coalition architect Sharad Pawar ripped into its leader Uddhav Thackeray, calling out his poor administrative capabilities and inability to quell the rebellion within Shiv Sena.
Pawar’s outburst in the second part of his autobiography, ‘Lok Maze Sangati’, which was released on Tuesday, could deal a blow to the wobbly Shiv Sena (UBT)-NCP-Congress front.
Pulling no punches, Pawar senior also exposed his nephew Ajit Pawar over his early morning swearing-in as deputy CM alongside BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis, saying he was unaware and never supported the “unethical” move. Fadnavis had claimed a month ago the NCP leadership was fully aware and they had acted with the knowledge of Sharad Pawar.
The book said it transpired that Ajit had submitted a list of around 40 legislators in a letter, saying he had the support of the NCP legislature party. “My name was misused to misguide a section of NCP legislators. When I individually asked them, everyone was with NCP and me,” said Pawar.
Thackeray, Pawar wrote, lacked political acumen. “It was happening owing to lack of experience. In politics, one must act swiftly to protect power. When the MVA was about to fall, he withdrew from the process in the first stage itself. It may have happened owing to his health condition.”
Pawar finds it difficult to believe that as CM of one of the most progressive states, Thackeray would visit Mantralaya, the administrative headquarters, only twice a week. “When Uddhav took over the reins, we were missing the openness of Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray. One had to take an appointment after taking into consideration his appointments with his doctors. Because of his health status, there were limitations for him.”
The MVA was a major achievement for anti-BJP parties when all-out efforts were being made to wind up other political parties, said Pawar. “In my opinion, the Shiv Sena leadership miserably failed to quell the rebellion within Shiv Sena. Instead of fighting till the last moment, Uddhav resigned, as a result, there was a jolt to MVA.”
On Ajit’s “hasty” decision, Pawar said: “It was a bad decision by Ajit, NCP will never support such a decision. Accordingly, I informed Uddhav Thackeray on the political developments.”
He felt since talks were dragging due to Congress’ indifferent attitude and chances of MVA looked bleak, Ajit lost patience. Pawar said he himself at one point walked out of a crucial meeting. “In my opinion, Ajit is an emotional person and he must have taken the decision in haste. The explanation was good for me, but the biggest challenge before me was to quell the rebellion in NCP. I called a meeting of NCP legislators at Y B Chavan Centre, and 50 of the 54 legislators attended. I concluded the rebellion has failed to take off. On the following day, I had a joint press conference with Uddhav Thackeray to send a clear message that MVA is intact,” said Pawar.
