NEW DELHI: Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and senior advocate Kalpathy Venkataraman Viswanathan on Friday took oath as Supreme Court judges on Friday, the last working day of the court before summer recess, as the collegium led by CJI D Y Chandrachud and the Union government completed the process of appointment in jet speed.
Justices Mishra and Viswanathan fill the two vacancies that arose from the retirement of Justices Dinesh Maheshwari and M R Shah on May 14 and 15 respectively. But the collegium would have to commence deliberations for three more appointments to fill vacancies that will arise in June with the retirements of Justices K M Joseph, Ajay Rastogi and V Ramasubramanian.
Through the appointment of Justice Mishra, Chhattisgarh will get its first representation in SC since the state was carved out of Madhya Pradesh in 2000. Justice Mishra became a judge of Chhattisgarh HC in 2009, and was appointed CJ of Andhra Pradesh HC in 2021.
Justice Viswanathan, who before his appointment was arguing cases, including for a petitioner seeking marriage rights for same-sex couples before a five-judge constitution bench in SC, is the 10th one to be directly elevated from bar to bench – a tradition that started with appointment of advocate Sarv Mitra Sikri as SC judge in 1964.
