JAMMU: Two Himachal Pradesh residents were feared dead after drowning in Ranjit Sagar Dam lake in Basohli town of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district, police said on Tuesday.
Police sources said someone saw the duo — Gagan Verma and Sahil Tandon from Himachal’s Dalhousie, both aged around 19 — drowning in the lake at Purthu, Basohli, and raised an alarm.
“Four friends from Dalhousie came to Purthu to celebrate Sahil’s birthday. The joy turned into tragedy when Sahil and his friend Gagan drowned while swimming in the lake,” said a source.
“A massive search operation was launched by Kathua Police along with SDRF and local divers, which continued till late evening. Contractors of commercial boats at the lake as well as small boat owners from Purthu also coordinated with the rescue teams voluntarily,” Kathua SSP said, adding that there was no trace of the victims so far even as the operation was underway.
Union minister Dr Jitendra Singh, who represents Kathua-Udhampur parliamentary constituency, tweeted: “Disturbed to learn about the unfortunate drowning of two boys Gagan Verma and Sahil Tandon at Purthu, Basohli in district Kathua… Hoping for the best and praying for the safety of the boys.”
