Tucker Carlson’s mysterious Moscow visit: Speculations over potential Putin interview

NEW DELHI: The recent sighting of Tucker Carlson, the former Fox News anchor, in Moscow has ignited widespread conjecture about the motives behind his visit to the Russian capital.
Carlson was seen in Moscow on the first of February, with reports of him attending a performance at the Bolshoi Theater, as per the Russian publication Mash.
The reason behind the broadcaster’s trip to Moscow has been a topic of intense curiosity, particularly regarding the possibility of him conducting an interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a Newsweek report said.
Georgia Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene expressed her thoughts on the social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, saying, “Democrats and their propagandists in the media are spasming at the prospect of Tucker Carlson interviewing Putin.” She further emphasized the importance of a free press and lauded Carlson for his role in disseminating the truth.
In response to Greene’s remarks, Tass, a state-backed Russian news agency, reported that Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin’s press secretary, had previously mentioned in 2023 that the world would have to “wait and see” if Putin would engage in a dialogue with Carlson.
Carlson disclosed in late September 2023 that he had made efforts to secure an interview with Putin, but claimed that the US government had thwarted his attempts. “I tried to interview Vladimir Putin, and the US government stopped me,” Carlson revealed to the Swiss magazine Die Weltwoche.
After his abrupt departure from Fox News in April 2023, Carlson ventured into independent broadcasting, establishing his own streaming service and hosting programs on various social media platforms.
Carlson’s commentary has resonated with Russian state media, leading to accusations of him parroting Russian state propaganda, the Newsweek report said. Following the onset of Russia’s comprehensive military action in Ukraine in February 2022, the progressive publication Mother Jones reported on a Kremlin directive that encouraged state-affiliated media to incorporate more of Carlson’s content in their coverage.
The directive highlighted the necessity of utilizing segments from Carlson’s Fox News broadcasts, where he vehemently criticized the United States and Nato for their roles in escalating the Ukraine conflict and for their overtly provocative stance towards Russia and President Putin.
Margarita Simonyan, a prominent figure in Kremlin propaganda and the head of the state-controlled broadcaster RT, acknowledged in August 2023 that Carlson had sought an interview with Putin. She praised Carlson’s work, saying, “he’s doing a great job.”
