Trump supports national ban on abortions around 15 weeks of pregnancy

NEW DELHI: Former US president Donald Trump indicated on Tuesday that he would be open to supporting a national ban on abortions at around 15 weeks into pregnancy, marking his first explicit backing for a specific timeframe limit on the procedure.
Trump, a Republican, has been credited with influencing the US Supreme Court’s decisions by appointing three justices who voted against Roe v Wade, a landmark case on abortion rights. While running for the presidency for the third time, Trump had previously refrained from endorsing a particular restriction on abortion, expressing concerns about potential political repercussions. Instead, he mentioned the possibility of “negotiating” a policy that would allow for exceptions in cases of rape, incest, and maternal life protection.
However, in a recent radio interview on the “Sid & Friends in the Morning” show on WABC, Trump criticized Democrats for not supporting a ban that would limit abortions in states permitting the practice. He mentioned a potential consensus around the 15-week mark for such restrictions, stating, “The number of weeks now, people are agreeing on 15. And I’m thinking in terms of that.”
Trump also acknowledged the longstanding debate on whether abortion regulations should be decided by states or the federal government, emphasising that legal experts on both sides generally view it as a state-level issue. Despite reports suggesting his private support for a ban on abortions after 16 weeks, Trump’s campaign dismissed such claims as “fake news,” emphasising his intention to negotiate on the issue.
Following his participation in Florida’s Republican presidential primary, Trump hinted at upcoming discussions on the possibility of a 16-week ban, indicating a forthcoming conversation on the matter. Abortion rights have been a pivotal topic for voters, and president Joe Biden’s administration and the Democrats are gearing up to emphasize the contrast between their stance and Trump’s in the upcoming 2024 election. Recent polling has shown that a majority of Americans support legal abortion in the early stages of pregnancy, with approximately half of US adults in favor of allowing abortions up to the 15-week mark.
In summary, Trump’s public remarks on supporting a national ban at 15 weeks have stirred discussions on the future of abortion policies in the United States, setting the stage for potential debates and negotiations on this contentious issue.
