INDORE: A group of men stood filming as three picnickers drowned in a waterbody in MP’s Dewas district on Independence Day. One of the bystanders tried to rescue the trio, but broke away from them as they began to drag him down in a desperate bid to cling to life. No one else dared step into the water after that. Some of those watching the horror were their friends.

On videos being shared on social media, you can hear some people shouting, “Bachalo yaar, koi to bachalo (someone please save them),” as they went on filming.
Due to the inaccessibility of the region, an SOS couldn’t be sent out. By the time the cops were alerted, it had been two hours and the three friends were dead. All three were from Indore – Yasin (26), Sufiyan (30) and Zafar (30).

Uday Nagar police station in charge Ajay Gurjar said the trio and a dozen other friends had driven to Bhairav Kund, 45km from Indore, on Tuesday. They were bathing in the lake when one of them started drowning. Two others swam towards him to save him, but they also started drowning.
In a video on social media, a youngster can be seen trying to rescue them but one of them started to pull the rescuer down. He swam back to save himself. Their friends, other picnickers and some locals kept shouting for help, but no one could muster the courage. As cameras filmed, the trio sank beneath the waters one by one.
Police and the authorities received the first call almost two hours later because of connectivity issues, said an official. State Disaster Emergency Response Force platoon commandant Rohan Raikwad said that the control room received a call at 7:30pm. They found the bodies at night.
Gurjar said that the bodies were handed over to the families after a post mortem examination on Wednesday.
Dewas collector Rishav Gupta said, “This waterfall is in a forest. Two forest rangers deployed there had warned the youths, but they did not pay any heed. We have over 100 waterbodies across the district and it is impossible to deploy police at all such spots”.
Three teens drown in Rajasthan river
An outing turned into tragedy when three teenage boys drowned in a river in Sapotara town in Rajasthan’s Karauli district on Tuesday. To celebrate Independence Day, a group of seven-eight friends went to the river for a picnic in Adooda village. Two of them, who couldn’t swim, drowned. The thirddied while trying to save the other two, police said. The deceased were identified as Prakash Pikku (16), Vikas Lal also known as Bhupendra (18), and Rajeev Kumar (18). “They are residents of the same village,” the official said. “All the other youths had successfully come out from the river in time,” the official said.
