Hello, hello, hello! Welcome to our weekly wrap-up of news and updates from the world of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
DragCon is just around the corner and your chance to vote for your favorites in the annual WOWIES is here. The anticipation is building for the eighth season of All Stars, and we’ve got commentary on the new batch of queen-testants from Ongina, Yuhua, Silky and Jan.
In addition, we have a recap of the Netflix series Beef from Trixie and Katya, wig wizardry from Jaymes Mansfield, a great interview with two-time All Star Pandora Boxx and lots more. Let’s not waste another minute and let’s bring it to the runway!
Don’t forget that tonight, celebrities and your drag favorites are teaming up for “Drag Isn’t Dangerous”, streaming live at 7pm (with a replay available for 48 hours after the live event.) “Drag Isn’t Dangerous” was created by Producer Entertainment Group (PEG), a full-service artist management firm, record label and production company representing many of the world’s top drag queens and LGBTQIA+ talent.
This one-night-only telethon on Sunday, May 7, at www.moment.co/dangerous features a mix of live and pre-taped performances, appearances, and testimonials from drag performers, LGBTQIA+ entertainers and celebrity allies, as well as a live celebrity phone bank accepting callers’ donations. Adam Lambert, Melissa McCarthy and Idina Menzel join a list of celebs and drag performers for the star-studded event.
In addition, a charity single, “Drag Isn’t Dangerous” featuring Jayelle and Ocean Kelly will be released on streaming services and performed live on the telethon. All revenue from the streaming and downloads of the song will be donated to the telethon. Pretty much ALL of your Drag Race faves, as well as drag icons and queens from the Boulet Brothers’ Dragula are heading into the kitchen to cook up some fun on the upcoming Hulu series Drag Me to Dinner. The show, hosted by Murray Hill (who is fantastic on HBO’s Somebody Somewhere). The friendly competition pits two teams of drag artists against each other to throw the best dinner party, with each week having a unique theme introduced by hospitality expert (and Neil Patrick Harris‘ hubby) David Burtka. After the queens compete in distinct categories — including Food & Drink, Design & Decor, and Entertainment & Overall Vibe — judges Neil Patrick Harris, Bianca Del Rio, and Haneefah Wood will deliberate and declare one the winner, who will walk away with the prize: the Glorious Golden Grater.
Among the Drag Me to Dinner teams are Drag Race All Stars 1 team contestants and hosts of “The Chop” Manila and Latrice, “Race Chaser’s” Alaska and Willam, “Hall & Closet” cohosts Jaida and Heidi, drag mother-daughter duo Vanjie and Alexis Mateo, Drag Race season 8 finalists Kim Chi and Naomi Smalls, House of Avalon members Gigi Goode and Symone, and longtime collaborators Jinkx Monsoon and BenDeLaCreme.
The other queen-testants include BeBe Zahara Benet, Biqtch Puddin’, Chelsea Piers, Darienne Lake, Detox, Ginger Minj, Jackie Beat, Jaida Essence Hall, Jasmine Rice LaBeija, Kiki Ball-Change, Marti Gould Cummings, Mayhem Miller, Meatball, Merrie Cherry, Morgan McMichaels, Mrs. Kasha Davis, Nina West, Peaches Christ, Peachez Iman Cummings, Pixie Aventura, Raja, Rhea Litré, Selma Nilla, Sherry Vine, Thorgy Thor, Trinity the Tuck and the late Heklina. Drag Me to Dinner premieres Wednesday, May 31 on Hulu.
This week, the nominees for the WOWIES were announced. These awards celebrate the tops in artistry, activism and entertainment amongst the LGBTQ+ community. As you can imagine, there are a LOT of Drag Race queens among the nominees. Gigi Goode, Juriji Der Klee and Ra’Jah O’Hara are up for Best Instagram, while Kerri Colby faces off against Plastique Tiara and Sugar & Spice for Best TikTok.
Our favorite “bootleg queen Yuhua Hamasaki, Rock M. Sakura and TS Madison are competing for Best YouTuber honors and this season’s runner-up Anetra is among the nominees for “WOWlebrity on the Rise.” See all of the nominees and cast your votes here. Long-time friend of News JoJo (and my own, personal drag doppelgänger) Pandora Boxx did a fantastic, in-depth interview with Matt (from Drag Tea) where she spills the tea about Drag Race (including her fashion feud with season two judge Santino Rice) All Stars season one and also discusses her participation in Adam Barta’s hilarious show #THEDISH. I love Pandora so much and am so glad to have her back on my YouTube feed.
Season 15 champion Sasha talks to the very funny Dulcé Sloan on The Daily Show.
Drag Race alums, including Shangela, Trixie Mattel, Raja, Eureka O’Hara, Scarlet Envy, Morgan McMichaels, Brooke Lynn Hytes, Angeria Paris Van Michaels, Mariah Paris Balenciaga, Monét X Change and Kornbread were out in LA supporting the congenial Nina West as the touring production of Hairspray hit the Dolby Theater. Kornbread shared a sweet story on her Twitter about her experience seeing Nina as Edna Turnblad.
In addition, a trio of Tracy Turnblads (Ricki Lake from the 1988 film, Maddie Baillio from Hairspray Live and Carly Jibson from the original Hairspray tour) joined the current tour’s Tracy, Niki Metcalfe, and Nina (as Edna Turnblad) for a photo op and after party. You can still catch Hairspray in LA until May 21. After that, the tour heads to Atlanta, Omaha, Austin and Tempe. You can get your tickets here.
I binged the amazing Netflix series Beef, starring Ali Wong and Steven Yeun, and I thought it was fantastic. If you need a second opinion, look no further than Trixie and Katya, who recap the highs, lows, and WTF? moments of the show’s first season on “I Like to Watch.”
On the latest (on YouTube) episode of “UNHhhh”, Trixie and Katya discuss all things domesticity, including home ownership, burp tubes and meeting new neighbors.
