NEW DELHI: Achieving the target of 500 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy is imminent, experts and industry leaders said at The Times of India’s Right To Excellence – Energy Summit 2023. They said the government and industry have stepped up their efforts to achieve the green energy target to reduce the country’s dependence on thermal power.
Speaking at the event, former Union power secretary Anil Razdansaid that while India is taking major steps, the cost burden of transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy should primarily fall on developed countries and not just developing nations.He said that India’s not just a buyer but a developer of renewable technologies through substantial investments in research and development.
Razdan, who is also the chairman of Energy and Environment Foundation, spoke about the significance of “Es” in the broader energy context, emphasising the necessity for energy and equity, and the critical importance of efficiency. He said that catering to a growing nation’s energy needs requires a balanced approach, acknowledging the complexities involved in ensuring affordable energy for the entire population while navigating the challenges of government subsidies within the constraints of taxation.
He said there’s a need to pursue the policy of “polluter pays” while taxation should be friendly for renewable energy.
Several industry leaders and policymakers participated in the summit in Delhi to discuss strategies for harnessing sustainable energy sources to further push the nation’s growth. Prasad Sanyal, Times Internet’s business head, said that India has taken giant strides in the renewable sector and described the journey as both amazing & inspiring. “Overcoming challenges of size and population, India has showcased its commitment to development while making a significant contribution to the global fight against climate change,” Sanyal added.
While lauding the steps taken by the Centre to promote generation and transmission of renewable energy, they raised the need for bring all states on one table. Catherine Leon, policy associate at the National Solar Energy Federation of India, said they have urged the government to set up a council to deal with issues relating to the sector on the lines of GST Council.
