Tamil Nadu takes lead to make it must for hotels to provide dorms for drivers of guests for their rest

NEW DELHI: In a move to ensure drivers get proper accommodation and rest, the Tamil Nadu government has taken a lead making it mandatory for hotels and lodges to provide dormitories for them with toilets, either within their premises or within 250 metres from such establishments.
In an order issued last week for amending the Tamil Nadu Combined Development and Building Rules, the housing and urban development has said that dormitories for drivers of the guests staying in hotels or lodges should be in proportion to the parking space.
“In cases of hotels and lodges, a dormitory with one bed space (with moving area around the bed) for each car parking space required for guest rooms in such hotel/ lodge along with one separate toilet and one separate bathroom for every eight beds or path thereof attached to the dormitory shall be provided exclusively to provide accommodation to the drivers of the guests,” the order said. It also said that the dormitory may be provided either within the premises of the hotel or lodge or within their 250 metres radius.
While other states can take a cue from Tamil Nadu to include such provision in the building byelaws to ensure that the drivers bringing their guests get a good place for taking rest, experts said the governments should also focus on creating good resting areas for drivers along national and state highways. “Drivers are not only operators of vehicles, but they also drive our economy. If they get a good place for rest, it will improve safety,” said Anil Chhikara, a transport sector expert.
Experts are also of the view that the logistics companies must follow the norms of maximum driving hours of drivers to avoid road accidents.
