NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear pleas seeking stay on implementation of Citizenship Amendment Rules on March 19.
An appeal was made in the Supreme Court seeking stay on the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Rules, 2024 until the petitions challenging the validity of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 are resolved.
The plea was filed by the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) seeking protection for Muslims under the Act. The IUML urged the court to allow Muslims to apply for citizenship and requested a report on their eligibility.
Another plea by the Democratic Youth Federation of India also seeks a stay on the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024.
The Supreme Court is currently reviewing various petitions challenging the constitutionality of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.
The IUML has requested the court to suspend the operation of the Act and Rules until a final decision is reached to avoid potential issues of citizenship deprivation in case the Act is deemed unconstitutional.
About 250 petitions disputing the provisions of the Act are pending in the court.
