SRINAGAR: The semi-autonomous Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Science (SKIMS) in Srinagar lost its autonomy, with the Centre striking off the special status that allowed the premier super-speciality hospital and deemed university of J&K to work somewhat independently.
SKIMS reported to the chief secretary and the head of the government, or CM, but the Centre in its latest order placed it on the public health and medical education department’s watch.
SKIMS is the only medical university in the Union territory that is headed by a director, who is also the ex-officio secretary to the government. The latest order didn’t mention if that would change too. Lieutenant governor was the chairperson of SKIMS’s governing body that works like a cabinet.
Apart from its main hospital and university, the 1977-established SKIMS has the state cancer institute, maternity hospital, nursing and paramedical colleges, and an affiliated medical college and hospital in Bemina on the outskirts of Srinagar.
