NEW DELHI: The monthly disposal of cases in the consumer commissions has surpassed the number of fresh cases filed since July 2022, government data shows. The rate of disposal was maximum at 142% in November and the high rate of disposal has helped in bringing down the overall pending cases in the district, state and national commissions.
Additional secretary in the consumer affairs ministry Nidhi Khare attributed the better performance of consumer commissions to the Centre’s focus to bring down pendency of cases and proactive role of states to fill the vacancies in the district and state consumer commissions. Sharing the details she said while during the preceding calendar years, the number of cases disposed of was less than the fresh filing of cases, the trend changed last year.
In 2022, the consumer commissions disposed off 1.82 lakh cases compared to the filing of 1.73 lakh fresh cases. Officials said they are confident of the trend continuing.
Data also show that the number of vacancies in consumer commissions have reduced drastically. While 246 and 631 posts of members and presidents in district forum were vacant in September 2021, this reduced to 83 and 251 respectively. Even in the state commissions, the vacancies have been filled.
Khare said the ministry is taking several proactive steps to address the complaints and concerns of consumers, including the setting up of mediation cells in consumer commissions and resolving grievances through the National Consumer Helpline.
She also said the government has created a “Right to Repair portal” to protect consumers against planned obsolescence — designing a product with limited life resulting in increasing e-waste. The portal will address the concerns on price, originality and warranty of spare parts. “It will enable consumers to be better informed about the product by mentioning methods to check authenticity of spare parts and information on country of origin,” the ministry said, in an official statement.
