Known for portraying characters older than her actual age, Shefali Shah initially gained recognition for her role as Akshay Kumar‘s mother and Amitabh Bachchan’s wife in the 2005 film ‘Waqt.’ Following a hiatus, she resurfaced in Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Dil Dhadakne Do‘ in 2015.When asked about her absence between 2005-2015, Shah revealed that she chose to focus on raising her children during that period, emphasizing that it was a conscious decision.

Shefali Shah opens up on her struggles in Bollywood: ‘I won awards, but I didn’t get any work…’

Reflecting on her career choices, Shah revealed that she spent a significant portion of her career waiting for the right projects rather than constantly working. Even when offered roles like Neelam Mehra in ‘Dil Dhadakne Do,’ she initially hesitated. She shared that she had reservations about playing a character older than her co-stars, Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra. However, after reading the script and understanding the nuances of the character, she embraced the role wholeheartedly.
The turning point in Shah’s career came when she declined roles in critically acclaimed films like ‘Neerja’ and ‘Kapoor & Sons.’ Despite the initial debates, she chose not to take those projects, realizing that if she committed to them, there might be no turning back. Instead, she decided to wait for the right opportunity.

The actress acknowledged that she wasn’t sure what she was waiting for until the advent of the OTT platform. The digital space opened new doors for her, and projects like ‘Delhi Crime’ reinforced the belief that there is no shelf life for women in the entertainment industry.

Meanwhile, Shefali Shah was last seen in the film ‘Three Of Us.’ Released on OTT, in the movie she portrayed a woman grappling with dementia.
