‘Shameful’: Elon Musk accuses Justin Trudeau of ‘crushing free speech’

[ad_1]

From the Russia-Ukraine war to the European migrant crisis, tech billionaire Elon Musk is always ready to express his opinion on microblogging site X. In his latest political comment, Musk has slammed the Canadian government, led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, for stifling free speech in the country. Musk’s comments were prompted by a recent Canadian government directive that mandates online streaming services to formally register with the government for regulatory oversight.
Journalist Glenn Greenwald had highlighted the situation in a post on X (formerly Twitter), pointing out the Canadian government’s repressive online censorship measures. In response, Musk condemned Trudeau’s actions, accusing him of attempting to suppress free speech in Canada, terming it as “shameful.”
This incident is part of a series of events where the Trudeau government has been accused of curbing freedom of speech. In a significant move in February 2022, Trudeau utilized emergency powers, a first in the country’s history, to bolster his government’s authority in handling protests against vaccine mandates by truckers.
Earlier, Musk on Saturday criticized Germany’s funding of migrant rescue operations in the Mediterranean, suggesting it could be viewed as an “invasion” of Italy.
Musk shared a post from a user named “Radio Genoa” on X, condemning German NGO operations in the Mediterranean. In response, the German foreign ministry defended their stance, emphasizing that their efforts were about saving lives. Musk questioned the German public’s awareness of the situation and challenged the government’s actions, suggesting transporting large numbers of illegal immigrants to Italian soil could be seen as a violation of Italy’s sovereignty, akin to an invasion.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also voiced her concerns, sending a letter of complaint to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz about Berlin’s funding of charities aiding irregular migrants in Italy.
