AMRITSAR: Following intensive deliberations of the executive committee of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Saturday, the panel has rejected the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) proposed by the central government, “deeming it unnecessary and against the interests of the Sikh community”.
Talking to mediapersons after the meeting, SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami said the committee had unanimously decided that there was no need for UCC within the country, as the Constitution itself upholds the principle of unity in diversity.
Dhami said that UCC had caused apprehensions among minorities in the country as it allegedly undermined their identity, uniqueness, and principles.
Referring to the setting up of a sub-committee consisting of Sikh intellectuals, historians, scholars, and legal experts to address the concerns surrounding the UCC, Dhami said, “The committee acknowledges the potential threat posed by the UCC to the minority communities.”
Emphasising that the Sikh community’s religious scriptures, teachings, principles, traditions, values, ethics, customs and independent identity couldn’t be challenged or evaluated based on any worldly law, he said, “Therefore, the Sikh community opposes the UCC.” Dhami added that the 21st Law Commission had also rejected the UCC, providing evidence that such laws lack practicality and are unnecessary.
Dwelling on other decisions taken during the meeting , Dhami said the SGPC would oversee the cases related to the Jagdish Tytler in h the killing of three Sikhs at the Pulbangash Gurudwara Sahib in Delhi in 1984.
