JAMMU: A 48-year-old police officer died on Wednesday after his service rifle allegedly went off by accident inside a security installation in Channi Himmat area on Jammu’s outskirts. The deceased was identified as Inspector Gurdeep Singh of Jammu and Kashmir Armed Police’s 7Bn.
A resident of J&K’s Poonch district, Singh received a bullet from his own service rifle inside the battalion headquarters at Channi Himmat, said police sources.“He was rushed to Jammu Government Medical College and Hospital by his colleagues, where he succumbed around 5.16pm,” said a source.
“The body was shifted to the hospital mortuary for post-mortem and his family was informed,” said the source, adding that police have launched inquest proceedings to ascertain how the accident took place.
