Secret Himanta-Conrad meet sparks tie-up buzz | India News

GUWAHATI: A secret meeting between Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Meghalaya counterpart, Conrad Sangma, in Guwahati on Tuesday night – before counting of votes in three northeastern states on Thursday – has sparked off speculation about the return of NPP to the NDA fold after a bitter campaign in which both parties went solo.
Sarma, who is North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) convener, had been instrumental in stitching up a six-party coalition in 2018 that denied Congress, which had emerged as the single largest party, the chance to form government in Meghalaya.
Sarma has said there will be status quo in Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya, and the NDA will retain power. He added that there will be a BJP-led government in Tripura and the party will be part of the ruling coalitions in both Meghalaya and Nagaland as it has been the last five years. “There will be no alliance with Congress and Trinamool Congress,” he had said on Wednesday.
Authorities clamped prohibitory orders under CrPC Section 144 across Tripura till 6 am on March 3 to prevent violence as thousands of polling agents across 50 locations in Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland prepared for counting of votes.
In view of pre-poll and post-poll violence in the region, three-tier security has been put in place, under CCTV and webcast surveillance, to help authorities monitor results.
In a late Wednesday evening incident of post-poll violence in Nagaland, one person was killed in police firing in Noklak district, even as repolling at four polling stations in Zunheboto, Wokha, Mon and Noklak districts passed off peacefully on Wednesday.
Polling took place for 178 seats across three states – 60 in Tripura on February 16, and 59 each in Nagaland and Meghalaya on February 27 – ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
Exit polls have predicted a near status quo in the three states, as has Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.
