Russia-Ukraine war: Nato to send ‘game-changing’ weapons

[ad_1]

NEW DELHI: Nato secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg has announced a significant shift in Nato’s military strategy, emphasizing the deployment of new, advanced weaponry and enhanced defense systems. This pivot aims to counteract evolving global threats and assert Nato’s military dominance on the world stage.
During a meeting on Thursday, which coincided with the 75th anniversary of Nato—a celebration somewhat dimmed by the ongoing conflict at its borders—member countries resolved to delve into their military stockpiles for additional air defense systems. This decision aims to bolster Ukraine’s defenses against Russian ballistic missile attacks.
Stoltenberg highlighted the urgency recognized by the alliance members following discussions with Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba, who made a strong case for further air defense support, particularly emphasizing the need for US-manufactured Patriot missiles.
Stoltenberg announced at a press briefing, “Allies will now go back and look into their inventories, look into if there are any ways they can provide more systems, in particular Patriots, but also of course ensure that the systems which are already there have the ammunition but also the spare parts (they need).”
Stoltenberg revealed Nato’s plans to introduce cutting-edge weapons and technology. He described these advancements as “game-changers,” capable of significantly enhancing Nato’s military capabilities and strategic positioning.
According to a Newsweek report, here is a list of some ‘game-changing’ weapons of Nato during the Russia-Ukraine war.
Tanks
Central to the conflict have been the German Leopard 2 and the US M1 Abrams tanks, which have recently seen increased demand in Eastern Europe. The Leopard 2, introduced in 1979, and the M1 Abrams, which debuted a year later, have proven their capabilities in conflicts such as those in Afghanistan and Syria. With around 3,600 Leopard 2 tanks built since the late ’70s and utilized by 21 nations, and about 10,700 M1 Abrams variants serving in various wars and used by nine countries, these tanks represent the evolution of Nato’s armored strength.
The Leopard 2A4 variant, likely to be supplied to Ukraine, and the M1A2 SEP Abrams, the advanced version used by US forces, exemplify modern tank warfare’s direction towards high-speed, heavily armored, and long-range combat vehicles.
Missile systems
The MIM-104 Patriot missile system, developed by Raytheon, has gained recognition for its effective defense against ballistic missiles and ability to engage long-distance targets. Similarly, the Storm Shadow missile, a product of France-based MBDA Systems, offers strategic deep-strike capability with its 250-kilometer range. Additionally, the US has equipped Ukraine with High-Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), further enhancing its long-range artillery capabilities.
Air power
In the domain of air superiority, F-16 and F-35 fighter jets have been instrumental for Nato allies. The F-16s, utilized by various nations for approximately three decades, and the more advanced F-35A Joint Strike Fighter jets, capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear weapons, signify the shift towards integrating fifth-generation aircraft into Nato’s arsenal.
