Ramakrishna Mission chief Swami Smarananandaji Maharaj dies at 94 | India News

KOLKATA/HOWRAH: Ramakrishna Mission president Swami Smarananandaji Maharaj died in a south Kolkata hospital on Tuesday night. He was 94, the organisation said. As per Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishthan, Smaranananda died at 8.14pm.
Smaranananda was hospitalised on Jan 29 with a urinary tract infection and put on ventilator support on March 3 after he developed septicaemia and respiratory failure, as per the hospital.Following a tracheostomy, he developed acute kidney problem. Smaranananda had been undergoing haemodialysis.
Both PM Modi and CM Mamata Banerjee had visited Smaranananda in hospital.
Swami Suvirananda, RKM secretary, said, “The mortal remains will lie at rest in Belur Math’s cultural centre. Devotees and followers can pay their last respects from morning till 8pm. The last rites will be conducted in Belur Math from 9pm.”
CM Mamata Banerjee, in a statement, said, “Deeply saddened at the news of the demise tonight of Srimat Swami Smarananandaji Maharaj, the revered president of Ramakrishna Math and Mission. This great monk during his lifetime has given spiritual leadership to the world order of the Ramakrishnaites and remains the source of solace for millions of devotees across the globe. I convey my deepest condolences to all his fellow monks, followers and his devotees.”
