CHENNAI/VANIYAMBADI: Four children drowned in pits filled with rainwater in two separate incidents in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur and Tirupattur districts on Tuesday.
In Tiruvallur, a seven-year-old boy and his six-year-old sister seemed to have accidentally fallen into a pit, dug up for the construction of a private rice mill at Uthukottai, while playing. The parents of Duraivel and Sneha were engaged as construction workers at the site and also doubled up as guards at night, and the family stayed nearby. The landowner had dug the six feet deep pit to extract sand, but the construction work was halted on Tuesday due to incessant rain over the past few days.
Finding her children missing for a long time, their mother checked around the site and found their bodies floating in the pit. She alerted others at the site, who pulled out the children and rushed them to a primary health centre. They were declared dead on arrival.
Police sources said no permission was acquired for construction of the mill. SP P Cephas Kalyan said a probe was on in this regard.
In the second incident, two girls aged 10 and 13 drowned while playing in a 25-ft-long and 10-ft-deep trench on their school premises in Chikkanankuppam village near Vaniyambadi in Tirupattur.
Police said Rajalakshmi, her seven-year-old brother Manivel and friend Monica were playing in the water when the two girls got stuck in the slush and drowned before the boy could call people for help.
Police said the trench had been dug up to excavate sand by a contractor hired to build a motorable road from the village to the school. District collector D Basakara Pandian said police had registered an FIR against the contractor, and the chief education officer had been directed to ensure that pits, if any, on the premises of schools or their vicinity must be closed immediately.
