Rafael Nadal Addressed Retirement Ahead of Carlos Alcaraz Netflix Slam Showdown – News JoJo

Rafael Nadal, the tennis giant with 22 Grand Slam wins under his belt, recently shared some thoughts about his future in tennis as he prepped for a match against Carlos Alcaraz in Las Vegas.

He hinted at the idea that the upcoming clay-court season could be his curtain call, although he quickly added that he’s not ready to officially hang up his racquet.

At 37, Nadal’s return to the sport has been eagerly watched by fans. After nearly a year off, he returned at the Brisbane International this January, advancing to the quarter-finals.

Unfortunately, a hip issue during a match in Brisbane kept him out of the 2024 Australian Open, adding to a series of recent setbacks due to injuries, including a significant hip injury from the 2023 Australian Open.

Despite the challenges, Nadal isn’t slowing down. He’s set his sights on playing in the Indian Wells Masters this March and aims to throw his all into this year’s European clay-court season, possibly his last. Nadal spoke candidly about his uncertainty regarding retirement but emphasized his desire to continue competing as long as he feels joy and competitiveness on the court.

Speaking at a press conference in Las Vegas before meeting with Alcaraz, Nadal outlined his intention to give everything he left during the European clay-court season.

“Whatever has to be left, leave it in the season of clay, which may or may not be the last, I have not decided 100 per cent. At the moment, things are going that way,” the Spaniard said.

“At the moment, I am considering playing in Indian Wells. I would love to play in Monte Carlo. And then, at this point in my career, I have to analyze how I am at every moment, the feelings I have and where I most want to play.

“I will try to do which is better to reach my goals with some chance. I want to do the things that I really want to be happy.”

For Nadal, saying goodbye to tennis isn’t in his immediate plans, stressing that he’s still in the game despite the challenges. He focuses on enjoying the sport he loves and assessing how he feels as the season progresses.

“I’m not saying goodbye because then I’d say I’m not playing anymore. This is an important point and I don’t want to say it because I’m not 100% clear about it. In the last two years I haven’t been able to play,” Nadal continued.

“Life is showing you the path. How did I imagine my farewell? At first, I didn’t imagine it because you start to imagine something, which means that the closer you are to it. It wasn’t something I had in mind. I would like to say goodbye well, being competitive and enjoying myself on the court.

“Whether that can be or not, time will tell. It is evident that the months and weeks show me a path that is being complicated. There are moments that are difficult to manage.”

“Two weeks ago, when I could not go to Doha, well it is another blow, but here we are. I’m going to give myself the opportunity to enjoy it a little more.”

Fans will no doubt be watching closely, hoping for more legendary moments from one of tennis’s greatest players, whether or not this season marks the end of his illustrious career.
