NEW DELHI: Russian President Vladimir Putin has criticized US elections, dismissing them as undemocratic while responding to Western critiques of Russia’s electoral process. “The whole world is laughing at what is happening there,” he remarked, regarding the state of democracy in the United States.
“It is just a catastrophe – it is not democracy – what on earth is it?”.Putin particularly highlighted the actions taken against former President Donald Trump, labeling the situation as a “catastrophe” that deviates from democratic norms.
Putin’s election victory
Election outcome: With over 99% of votes counted, Putin secured 87% in a victory described as record-breaking for Russian presidential elections,
Western leaders, including President Volodymyr Zelensky and EU chief Charles Michel, have denounced the election as illegitimate. The UK and the US have also criticized the fairness and the extension of voting into occupied Ukrainian territories.
Warning on World War 3
Putin warned the West that a direct conflict between Russia and the US-led Nato military alliance would mean the planet was one step away from World War Three but said hardly anyone wanted such a scenario.
“It is clear to everyone that this will be one step away from a full-scale World War Three. I think hardly anyone is interested in this,” Putin told reporters after winning the biggest ever landslide in post-Soviet Russian history.
Putin maintained that Russian forces hold the upper hand in Ukraine, despite recent successful Ukrainian counterattacks. In response to continued Ukrainian aggression, Putin suggested the potential creation of a buffer zone, extending Russian control into more Ukrainian territory.
