NEW DELHI: Week-long series of strikes organized by the Verdi union brought public transport services in Germany to a standstill. The strikes, which started on Friday and affected 14 out of the country’s 16 states, were triggered by disagreements over working hours.
Although the strikes were scheduled to end in Berlin at 2 pm, they continued in other parts of the country until Saturday.In addition to the transport strikes, climate protests advocating for greener transportation took place in over 100 cities, organized by Fridays for Future and other environmental groups.
This marks the second wave of nationwide transport strikes initiated by Verdi in recent weeks. Verdi represents over 90,000 employees from various municipal companies across Germany.
The union has cited a lack of progress in negotiations for public transport workers” contracts, specifically pushing for reduced working hours and increased leave.
However, Berlin’s public transport operator BVG criticized the strikes, deeming them unnecessary and exaggerated.
Germany, currently grappling with high inflation, has experienced several strikes impacting air travel and railways. Furthermore, the GDL train drivers” union and Deutsche Bahn failed to reach an agreement during lengthy discussions, raising the possibility of further industrial action on the railways.
