NEW DELHI: Billionaire Elon Musk has come under increasing scrutiny for his reported use of psychedelic drugs, posing potential risks to both his health and the business empire he oversees. According to the Wall Street Journal, concerns have been raised by several board members at Tesla and SpaceX regarding Musk’s alleged drug use.
The report revealed that Musk has purportedly engaged in the consumption of LSD, cocaine, ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms at private parties worldwide, where attendees are bound by nondisclosure agreements or are required to surrender their phones. While Musk claims a prescription for the psychedelic-like drug ketamine, he has publicly admitted to using marijuana.
Musk’s intense work schedule and minimal sleep have been a subject of discussion, often cited as reasons behind his occasional outbursts. Walter Isaacson’s biography portrayed Musk’s occasional outbursts and temperamental behavior as “demon mode.”
An incident at a SpaceX event in 2017 further raised concerns about Musk’s coherence, with executives claiming he slurred and rambled for fifteen minutes on stage. Spiro dismisses this as false, contradicting eyewitness accounts.
Concerns about Musk’s stability arose in 2018 when he tweeted about considering taking Tesla private at $420. Board members reportedly considered him tweeting while under the influence and contemplated suggesting a leave of absence. The tweet resulted in a Securities and Exchange Commission investigation, a $40 million penalty and Musk stepping down as Tesla chairman.
Musk’s use of marijuana on the Joe Rogan Show in 2018 resulted in Nasa raising concerns, leading to random drug tests for SpaceX personnel. Such drug use could violate corporate regulations and federal contracts at both SpaceX and Tesla.
At a Los Angeles party in 2018, Musk reportedly took multiple acid tablets, followed by the use of magic mushrooms at a Mexico party in 2019. In 2021, Musk and his brother Kimbal were said to have used recreational ketamine at an Art Basel house party in Miami, alongside former Tesla board member Steve Jurvetson.
Former Tesla director Linda Johnson Rice reportedly chose not to seek reelection in 2019 due to her frustration with Musk’s erratic behavior and drug use. However, Musk’s attorney Alex Spiro contended that Musk undergoes regular and random drug tests at SpaceX and has consistently passed them as per the report.
