RAIPUR: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday came out strongly against the jibes of ‘parivarwad’, saying it was not ‘dynastic politics‘ but intense patriotism that couldn’t be shaken by the assassinations of her father, Rajiv Gandhi, and grandmother, Indira Gandhi, both former Prime Ministers.
While Indira Gandhi was gunned down by her bodyguards in 1984, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by LTTE terrorists in Tamil Nadu in 1991.
Priyanka said, “Our grandmother, Indira Gandhi, was not just our grandmother but a great personality. How can anyone kill her so violently? I often think what an intense feeling of patriotism she must have instilled in our hearts that our faith in the country didn’t break even for a single minute or a second despite such a violent incident.”
“My father was assassinated when I was 19 years old. But still our faith and patriotism remained intact. I am saying this because when we talk about Nehru ji, Indira ji and Rajiv ji, those who criticise us immediately raise the issue of ‘parivarwad’,” she said.
“This is not ‘parivarwad’, but patriotism that cannot be broken. It is faith towards people, farmers. No matter what you (BJP and other political rivals) say, you will never be able to break this faith and patriotism,” she said.
Priyanka, an AICC general secretary, addressing election rallies in Khairagarh and Bilaspur constituencies, where she promised eight ‘guarantees’ to the people of Chhattisgarh, including the launch of a women-focused ‘Nyay’ scheme for Rs 500 subsidy per LPG cylinder refill and waiver of loans of women self-help groups.
She also promised free treatment of accident victims under the Chief Minister’s Special Health Assistance Scheme.
Khairagarh and Bilaspur go to the polls in the second phase on November 17.
At both rallies, apart from the gas subsidy and loan waiver, Priyanka promised free electricity for up to 200 units and upgrade of 6,000 schools to Swami Aatmanand schools. The ‘Mehtari Nyay Yojana’ subsidy will be credited directly in the bank accounts of the beneficiaries, she said.
“We have 300 rural industrial parks, which will be increased to 1,000. The ‘Tivara’ lentil will also be included in the farmers’ support price,” she said. All the outstanding motor vehicle tax and penalties worth Rs 726 crore until 2018 for more than 6,600 vehicle owners engaged in the transport business will be waived,” she added.
She criticised BJP at the Centre, alleging that the BJP was “taking people’s money and putting it in the pockets of their industrialist friends”. “In contrast, the Congress in Chhattisgarh has returned people’s money to them through various schemes,” she said.
The Congress leader expressed concern about the privatization of PSUs, ports, railways, and airports at low prices, which could jeopardize employment and pensions.
“BJP says it aims to uplift the lives of ST, SC, OBCs, but when asked for a caste census, they refuse. How can welfare schemes reach the needy when their population and needs are unknown? They celebrated when the women’s reservation bill was passed, but then they said it cannot be implemented for 10 years, which is misleading politics. Do you want to vote for those who seek votes in the name of religion and create problems?” Priyanka asked.
