In the latest 2024 Presidential Greatness Project’s expert poll unveiled over the weekend, Abraham Lincoln was hailed as the foremost among US presidents, while Donald Trump found himself at the bottom rung. This survey, a continuation of studies carried out in 2015 and 2018, aimed to “create a ranking of presidential greatness that covered all presidents from George Washington to Joe Biden,” wrote project’s co-leaders, Brandon Rottinghaus, a political science professor at the University of Houston, and Justin Vaughn, a political science professor at Coastal Carolina University.
Survey participants rated each president on a 0 to 100 scale regarding their “overall greatness,” with zero indicating failure, 50 average, and 100 outstanding. These scores were then averaged and the presidents were ranked accordingly.
The survey positioned Lincoln at the pinnacle with an average of 95.03, with Franklin Delano Roosevelt securing the second spot with a score of 90.83. Following closely were George Washington with 90.32, Teddy Roosevelt with 78.58, and Thomas Jefferson with 77.53.
Trump was placed at the very end, scoring a 10.92 average, even below James Buchanan, Andrew Johnson, Franklin Pierce, William Henry Harrison, and Warren Harding, as per the findings of the Presidential Greatness Project.
Interestingly, President Joe Biden achieved a noteworthy position, securing the 14th spot with a 62.7 rating.
“Biden’s most important achievements may be that he rescued the presidency from Trump, resumed a more traditional style of presidential leadership and is gearing up to keep the office out of his predecessor’s hands this fall,” the survey said.
The current findings draw from the feedback of 154 scholars specializing in presidential politics, all members of the American Political Science Association, based on a survey conducted online via Qualtrics from November 15 to December 31, 2023.
In his discussion with Newsweek, Vaughn reflected on the longstanding tradition of such rankings, traditionally dominated by historians, whereas the Presidential Greatness Project solicited views from political science experts. He said, “Lincoln has topped the list all three times we have conducted this survey,” adding that Trump’s last-place ranking was consistent with the 2018 results, though he was not included in the 2015 survey as Obama was then in office.
Trump was also identified as the “most polarizing” president in this survey. “Donald Trump is by far the most polarizing of the ranked presidents, selected by 170 respondents and earning a 1.64 average (1 is a “most polarizing” ranking). Andrew Jackson is second-most polarizing (74, 3.4), followed by Obama (69, 3.4), and Reagan (66, 3.6). Conversely, George Washington is clearly the least polarizing president, selected by 125 respondents and earning a 1.25 average (1 is a “least polarizing” ranking). Washington is followed by Eisenhower (91, 2.7), Lincoln (60, 1.8), and Truman (45, 3.5),” the survey said.
