President of Peru’s home raided over undeclared luxury watches

NEW DELHI: Government agents executed a raid on the residence of Peruvian President Boluarte as part of an investigation into her ownership of luxury watches. The raid, which was authorized by the judiciary at the request of the attorney general’s office, was captured on television screens across Peru late Friday. Images showed members of an investigative team breaking into the president’s residence using a sledgehammer.
Dina Boluarte, who assumed office in July 2021 as vice president and social inclusion minister before becoming president in December 2022, is under preliminary investigation for the possession of a collection of luxury watches that she did not disclose.
Initially, Boluarte claimed ownership of one Rolex watch, saying that it was acquired through personal gains since she was 18-years-old. She urged the media to refrain from delving into her personal matters.
Earlier in the week, Attorney General Juan Villena criticized Boluarte’s request to postpone her appearance before the court by two weeks, emphasizing her obligation to cooperate with the investigation. This development adds to the political turmoil in Peru, a country that has witnessed six presidents in the last five years.
Many perceive Boluarte’s recent statements as contradicting her earlier pledge to truthfully address prosecutors.
The Attorney General stressed Boluarte’s obligation to promptly produce the three Rolex watches for investigation, warning against any attempt to dispose of or destroy them.
Boluarte, a 61-year-old lawyer, rose from a modest district official to vice president under President Pedro Castillo in July 2021. She assumed the presidency in December 2022 following Castillo’s impeachment after he tried to dissolve Congress and rule by decree, resulting in protests that led to the deaths of at least 49 people.
Critics accuse Boluarte’s government of adopting an increasingly authoritarian stance as it resisted calls for early elections and collaborated with congressional members on legislation that threatens the independence of Peru’s judicial system.
