NEW DELHI: President Droupadi Murmu has given her assent to the women’s reservation bill that was cleared by both houses of Parliament during a special session earlier this month.
Following the President’s nod, the government of India has issued a gazette notification for the legislation, officially known as Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.
The bill, which is now an Act, proposes 33 per cent reservation for women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

The bill was passed after several amendments including ones for giving other backward classes (OBCs) reservation within the 33 per cent quota were rejected.
The reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies will be both horizontal and vertical, applying to the SC-ST categories.
The law will come into force once the census and delimitation exercise takes place after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Union home minister Amit Shah had said that the exercise will take place soon after elections, setting in motion the process to make women’s reservation a reality.
