MUMBAI: Samajwadi Party has lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission regarding alleged violations of the electoral code of conduct by state power utility, MSEDCL.
The complaint was lodged by power activist and Samajwadi Party leader Pratap Hogade, who highlighted that electricity bills distributed in Ichalkaranji in Kolhapur district carried govt advertisements, which the party deemed as a breach of electoral guidelines.
Following a directive from the Election Commission, MSEDCL has stopped printing the advertisements.
“The issue was with only about 1,000-1,500 bills in Ichalkaranji as local bill distributors were printing on old stationery (in stock). In other parts of the state, there was no such violation. We have taken cognisance of the issue,” said a source from MSEDCL.
Hogade, in his complaint, said the power bills that he came across prominently featured photographs of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, chief minister Eknath Shinde, among others, alongside descriptions of Maharashtra’s progress under the banner of Surajya (good governance)-Ek Varsh Surajyachae (a year of good governance).
