Pope Francis urges diplomatic resolution for Ukraine war

NEW DELHI: Pope Francis on Sunday urged for a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing war in Ukraine, with the aim of establishing a fair and long-lasting peace. His call comes as the world marks the second anniversary of Russia’s invasion, Reuters reported.
In his weekly Angelus message, the Pope said, “So many victims, wounded, destruction, anguish, and tears in a period that is becoming terribly long and whose end is not in sight. It is a war that not only devastates that region but also unleashes global waves of hate and fear”.
“I plead for that little bit of humanity to be found to create the conditions for a diplomatic solution in search of a just and lasting peace”, he added.
The leaders of the group of seven major democracies have pledged their support to Ukraine, and several Western leaders have visited Kyiv to demonstrate solidarity on this anniversary.
Francis also expressed his concerns on the violence that erupted in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
“I join the bishops in their call to pray for peace, hoping for an end to the clashes and a search for genuine and constructive dialogue”, Pope said.
Last week, intense clashes between the DRC army and Rwandan-backed M23 Tutsi-led rebels in eastern Congo erupted, killing scores and displacing hundreds of thousands.
