Pawar vs Pawar in Baramati: NCP fields Ajit Pawar’s wife Sunetra against sister-in-law Supriya Sule | India News

NEW DELHI: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Saturday has fielded Sunetra Pawar, the wife of Maharashtra’s deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, as their candidate for the Baramati Lok Sabha seat.
The development sets the stage for a unique electoral face-off as Sunetra will be contesting against her sister-in-law and Sharad Pawar‘s daughter, Supriya Sule, in the Pawar family stronghold.
Sunetra Pawar expressed her gratitude and described the day as fortunate for her following the announcement of her candidacy by Maharashtra NCP unit president Sunil Tatkare. The decision came shortly after the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) unveiled its initial list of five candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra. The party retained Supriya Sule for Baramati and fielded Nilesh Lanke, who switched allegiance from the Ajit Pawar camp, for the Ahmednagar constituency.
“This is a lucky day for me. I thank Narendra Modiji, Amit Shah, and all leaders of Mahayuti (Shiv Sena, BJP, and NCP) for considering me capable of fighting the election,” Sunetra Pawar told a Marathi news channel.
“Voters have taken the fight in their hands,” she said when asked about facing off with Supriya Sule.
Shiv Sena leader Vijay Shivtare, a fierce critic of Ajit Pawar, opted out of the electoral race in Baramati, signaling a shift in his approach. With Sunetra Pawar entering electoral politics as a newcomer, Baramati is gearing up for a Pawar versus Pawar contest following the party split.
The primary battle is expected between Ajit Pawar, a member of the Shiv Sena-led Maharashtra government, and his uncle Sharad Pawar. The Baramati Lok Sabha constituency comprises six assembly segments, with Sharad Pawar having a history of multiple victories in the region. Supriya Sule secured a consecutive win in the Baramati constituency in the 2019 elections.
The NCP (SP), part of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance alongside Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress, is set to contest 10 seats in Maharashtra, which holds 48 Lok Sabha seats.
