NEW DELHI: The Central Hall of Parliament on Friday hosted more than 500 elected women representatives from across the country on Friday, including ‘sarpanches‘ from panchayats and urban local bodies who had come together to participate in a day long training session – ‘Panchayat Se Parliament Tak’.
Addressing the women representatives, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla referred to the Nari Shakti Vandan Act and said, “The purpose of the legislation, to reserve one-third of the total seats in the Lok Sabha and state legislatures for women, will prove to be a gamechanger in bringing women to leadership roles in the decision-making process.”
“Whereas the distance between the objectives of our Constitution and current realities on gender equality are yet to be completely bridged, the recent initiatives of the government have provided equal opportunities to women to bring them into the mainstream,” Birla said.
This programme was organised by the Institute of Constitutional and Parliament Studies and the National Commission for Women to empower women grassroots leaders.
