Over 2-3rds of Rs 2,000 notes deposited

NEW DELHI: Around Rs 2.5 lakh crore of Rs 2,000 currency notes have been deposited or exchanged so far, providing much needed comfort to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which has urged that these notes be exchanged or deposited by the end of September.
This means that so far, more than two-thirds of the Rs 3.6 lakh crore of the Rs 2,000 notes that were in circulation have come back.
With individuals not encountering any problems in the exchange or deposit of notes, RBI officials are now urging them to complete the exercise at the earliest, instead of waiting, as it wants to avoid any last-minute rush at bank branches. “We have not seen any major complaints and things are going on in a steady fashion. It will be good if people go to bank branches to deposit or exchange notes now, instead of waiting to go there closer to the deadline,” an official said.
In May, the RBI had said that it had decided to withdraw the high-denomination notes.
